IELTS Cambridge 17 Essay: Health Problems
Nowadays, an increasing number of people with health problems are using alternative medicines and treatments instead of visiting their normal doctor.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
In recent years, a growing number of unwell individuals have begun to adopt the use of alternative medicines and treatments. In my opinion, though these can sometimes be effective, this trend is negative overall due to the superiority of modern medicine.
Those who support alternative remedies argue there is historical evidence in favor of their effectiveness. A pertinent example of this would be the popularity of traditional Chinese medicine in Asia. Many of their medicines and treatments date back hundreds or even thousands of years. Over that time, they have been tested and their effect verified in some cases. Contemporary health researchers are often able to later identify the scientific rationale but it is possible there are remedies in use today that we still do not understand. This ignorance should not serve as a justification to question their overall importance.
However, the vast majority of viable medical treatment is modern. Scientists now understand more rigorously the underlying structures of cells, viruses, bacteria, cancers, and various other maladies. This has allowed for the creation of undeniably effective procedures such as surgery and the discovery of crucial medicines like penicillin. There is no doubt as to why these medicines work and therefore in the future they will only become more refined and safe. In contrast, traditional medicine may be effective for unknown reasons but its applicability is limited and it will not advance overtime.
In conclusion, with few exceptions, traditional medicine is a better alternative to less verifiable treatments and pharmaceuticals. Individuals can attempt to use them but should rely on their usual doctors.

Dear Dave,
Hope you’re doing fine. After reading this great Model Answer, I have a question to ask.
In the 1st Body Paragraph, I feel that something is wrong with the phrase ‘date back’ in this sentence: “Many of their medicines and treatments date back hundreds or even thousands of years”.
Instead, if you use ‘date back to’ OR ‘date from’, then the grammatical construction of the whole sentence will be completely accurate.
Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Hojat
Thanks Hojat – it is right the way that it is.
Not sure if it is ellipsis or it can just be used that way but date back + object is acceptable and common.
Thank you very much for your time and feedback.
No problem!
In the conclusion, why does it say ‘traditional medicine is a better alternative’ when the body of the essay highlights the superiority of modern medicine?
Also, in paragraph 2: This ignorance should not serve as a justification to question their overall importance.
What is the ignorance here, and what is ‘their’ referring to in ‘their overall importance’?
These days many people who suffer from diseases trust alternative medicine rather than visit a normal physician. As different kinds of alternative medicines often have not been approved in scientific studies and have limited efficiency, I think it is a negative development.
Alternative medicines like needle medicine have been evolved over a long time, mostly based on personal experiences but often have not been evaluated with scientific methods. On the contrary, when a new drug is released in modern medicine, it is usually assessed by a team of different specialists in clinical trial studies and its utility and Efficiency is checked carefully. furthermore, at least in the USA, it should be approved by the FDA. alternative medicines often do not undergo this vital process, so their efficiency can not be confirmed. some independent studies have shown that some kind of alternative medicines could have mental and physical harmful side effects. Based on these evidences, a significant group of doctors believe that they should be banned and only and only can be prescribed if their efficiency is confirmed in scientific researches.
In contrast to modern medicine, alternative medicines often have limited solutions for different diseases. for example, they usually offer the same prescription for all kinds of headaches. As a result, lots of patients cannot be cured efficiently. Furthermore, diseases can progress over time and if a patient wasted his/her time pursuing alternative treatment, he/she could lose the chance for getting better. a recent study in Iran showed that only a small proportion of neonates who suffered from hyperbilirubinemia, were treated with Islamic medicine (a branch of alternative medicine) plus some of them developed hearing loss and cerebral problems as side effects of this kind of treatment. as a result, using alternative medicine have been restricted enormously in Iran.
To sum up, although alternative medicine is increasingly becoming popular people should be warned about their efficiency and approval protocols. if these kinds of medicines are used beside modern medicine cautiously, they will probably have better effects
