Many consider that foreigners should live as local people, because every country has its own unique cultures. In my opinion, behaving according to native customs may enhance the understanding of the visiting place and ensure that local people feel comfortable.
Vistors would likely have a deeper understanding of the area when they follow the convention. Many customs are set up based on historic reasons. For example, people living in north-east China store plenty of vegetables in October and stop buying any more. The cause of such a tradition is not only the cold weather, but also the lack of a vegetable supply chain in ancient winter. As a result, many methods for keeping vegetables fresh are well-known in that area. Nowadays, tourists can buy fresh vegetables in winter at that place, but they would not have the chance to touch this history if they do not follow the local tradition.
Local people may want to live their normal lives instead of trying to cater to their customers. When visiting another place, the host may show their traditions, such as showing traditional dishes or clothes. It may be rude if visitors refuse to have a try and further demand the host prepare what visitors usually eat or wear. For instance, it may be difficult for a Japanese person to serve his Italian friends traditional Italian pizza. Therefore, have a try on those customs would not only broaden visitors’ horizons, but the host would also feel pleasure and convenience.
In sum, following local customs would likely benefit visitors by learning more about locals and protecting them from living their normal lives. In addition, governments also need to protect local cultures.
