IELTS Essay: Value of Old Age and Youth

In some places, old age is valued, while in other cultures youth is considered more important.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In certain nations, the interests of elderly people are prioritized over younger generations. In my opinion, although young people are important for economic reasons, valuing an older population is a revealing commitment to human dignity.

Those who value the youth in a nation argue they form a country’s economic base. There is little doubt that the majority of all workforces globally are comprised of young adults and middle-aged citizens. The average working age in nearly all industries is around 30. Young people have the energy, passion, and motivation to work hard and achieve not only for the good of society but also to establish a higher standard of living for themselves and their families. It is therefore logical that governments should ensure younger generations have ample access to education and the resources needed to become contributing members of society. They will contribute the most in all likelihood.

However, human progress is about more than simply utilitarian benefits. In the past, it might have been necessary for human civilization to cruelly neglect older populations when they were fighting wars and resources were scarce. That is no longer the situation. Most countries, even developing ones, can now afford to provide healthcare for all citizens and some degree of retirement support. By undertaking these kindnesses, humans distinguish themselves clearly from their basest and most animalistic instincts. This can be understood as the surest sign that humanity is an evolved species culturally, socially, and emotionally and trumps any materialistic concerns related to growing already mature economies.

In conclusion, though there are utilitarian reasons to support youth movements, it is more important and principled to value older people. This is already done in some cultures but should be more widespread.

IELTS Essay: The Best Time in History

Some people say that now is the best time in history to be living.

What is your opinion about this?

What other time in history would be interesting to live in?

Many today claim that we are living at the pinnacle of human progress and civilization. I am largely in agreement with this sentiment and believe that living in Europe during the Renaissance would also be interesting.

The standard of living enjoyed by the average person today is unprecedented. This can be evidenced across a variety of areas including medicine, technology, entertainment, transportation, art, and so on. A person living hundreds of years ago had a much higher probability of fighting in a war or dying early because of disease. Even if they survived these perils, they would likely still have to work long days at difficult occupations such as farming. Today, most people work around 40 hours a week in a comfortable office with air conditioning or heating. The only meaningful tradeoff now is that technology has become so pervasive, in terms of social media and streaming platforms, that people are mentally and physically passive.

Another period in history that would be interesting to reside in would be the Renaissance. The Renaissance is often hailed as the beginning of modern civilization and striving for truly great achievements. There were significant advances made in science and medicine during this time period. More importantly, the arts were elevated to a height comparable with the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo created some of the greatest masterpieces in human history. I would enjoy being alive then in order to either participate in or simply observe the optimism of the European Renaissance, particularly in contrast to the cynical passivity of modern life.

In conclusion, people today are more entitled than any previous generations though there are tradeoffs related to technology. It would also be ideal to live in a period such as the Renaissance when human expression and endeavor were flourishing.

IELTS Task 1: Australian Exports

The line chart shows exports in billions of dollars.

The line chart details exports from Australia to Japan, the United States, China, and India from 1990 to 2012. Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that total exports to India and particularly China rose, while US and Japanese exports declined. By the end of the period, Chinese exports had become most common, followed by Japanese, American, and finally Indian ones.

The figure for Japan began the period significantly higher than other nations at over 26% before a sharp decline over the next 5 years to around 20% and a more minimal downward trend until 2012 to finish at near 17%. In marked contrast, China in 1990 only received 3% of exports and this figure grew exponentially, especially after the year 2000 and reached a peak of 28% in 2012.

The data for the United States fluctuated around 10% until 2000, then declined and recovered slightly to finish the time surveyed at 6% Similarly, Indian exports stood at around 1% for the first ten years detailed, actually overtook the United States with 7% in 2010 and then ended the period slightly lower than the USA.

IELTS Essay: Standards of Living

A rise in the standard of living in a country often only seems to benefit cities rather than rural areas.

What problems can this cause?

How might these problems be reduced?

When standards of living increase, it is primarily urban residents, not those in the countryside, who benefit. In my opinion, this can lead to opposite problems related to population density and is best mitigated by governmental action.

Inequality in terms of standard of living engenders population problems for cities and rural regions. Cities have become over-populated in the last century as they offer a wider range of educational, occupational, and recreational options. Elevated population density means that although residents can enjoy a higher standard of living generally, they must also overcome concomitant effects from overcrowding such as more traffic, less sanitary conditions, and higher crime rates. The inverse problem exists outside cities as residents leave and locals struggle to earn a living in sparsely populated towns and villages.

These related problems can best be countered by the authorities. There are various initiatives that could be implemented. One real-world example of this would be in Japan where the government in recent years has addressed dwindling population numbers in the countryside by auctioning off country homes cheaply. Prospective home-owners are often able to buy houses nearly for free if they agree to live and work in a town with few residents. Another possible measure would be for governments to invest more in urban infrastructure. Since migrations to cities are likely inevitable, this is a more pragmatic tactic.

In conclusion, the inverse issues created for rural and urban areas by rising standards of living can be effectively controlled if governments intervene. This issue will only become more pressing as the global middle class continues to grow.
