IELTS Essay: Letter to a Cinema Manager
Write a letter to the manager of a cinema (movie theatre) about a jacket you have left behind after a film. In your letter:
- Describe the jacket
- Describe where you were seated
- Explain what you want to be done
Dear theatre management,
I am writing because I forgot my jacket during a recent showing at your cinema. The jacket is made from handmade hemp so it is rough and very distinctive. It is dyed blue and there is embroidery on the sleeves of brightly colored flowers.
I was in cinema 6 for the afternoon session of King Kong. I ordered my tickets online beforehand and I just double-checked to confirm that my friend and I were seated in row K, seats 12 and 13, near the center of the cinema.
I would advise you to check under the chairs in the cinema and in your lost and found section. If you are able to locate my jacket, please give me a phone call at 781-334-5054 and I will drive over to pick it up. If it is more convenient, you can also mail it to the return address on this envelope.
Thank you for your assistance.
Regards,
Jeremy

You recently attended a conference and would like to give a presentation to your colleagues about it. Write a letter to your manager and include
- The topic of the conference
- Why you want to present about it
- When it could be done
Dear Sir,
I have attended the movie “Knives Out” Friday night 9 o’clock show at Phoenix mall in Mississauga. I was sitting in the second last row with a seat number B2( near the emergency exit ).
I was wearing a black colour leather jacket when I was watching the movie. Once the movie was finished I came to the parking lot and realised that I left my jacket in the theatre itself. I rushed back to the theatre and figured since it was the last show the theatre was closed. I checked with the staff and according to them only after 2 days theatres will open again. They advised me to write to the manager so I am writing to you.
I have got the contact number of one of the staff from the theatre so that I can check with them on Monday about the whereabouts of my jackets. Perhaps It will be really helpful if you can advise the staff to keep the jacket if they find during cleaning and other routine works. I will come back on Monday and pick up my jacket.
I really appreciate your help.
Yours Sincerely

Hi Dave,
I am a bit confused why this is treated as a semi-formal letter rather than a formal letter, as the content is addressed to someone the writer doesn’t know (Dear Sir or Madam, or Dear Theater Manager, without knowing the person’s name).
Thank you in advance for reading this comment and appreciate it if you could help answer the question.
Sincerely,
Judy
Hi Judy, thanks for the question.
Formal would be fine here too but since it is just a cinema manager it doesn’t have to be that formal.
